Rhetoric and the Hollywood Blockbuster

John Yorken tarinankerronnan workshop 16.11.2022

Workshopin kieli on englanti.

Workshop alkaa ilmoittautumisella ja aamupalalla klo 8.30. Työskentely alkaa klo 9.00 ja päättyy klo 16.00. Workshop järjestetään Scandic Simonkenttä -hotellissa (Simonkatu 9, Helsinki).

This is a workshop on story structure – what it is, why it is the shape it is, and where that comes from.  We’ll look at how it works in all forms of fiction as well as its wider application in rhetoric – in politics and  – in particular business and advertising.

In a wide-ranging session, we’ll explore how story structure works – and follow its development from the theatre of Terence and Shakespeare, through the novel to television and film, but more pertinently we’ll ask:

  • What can traditional story structure teach us about rhetoric?
  • What lessons can we learn from Hollywood on how we deliver a message successfully to the widest possible audience?
  • What the narrative techniques of drama can lend to the crafting of successful speechmaking

We’ll look at how Donald Trump followed the rules of the Hollywood Blockbuster against the Democrats’ art-house movie – why it worked so well, and how it’s possible to learn from those lessons and adapt them to all forms of communication.

The seminar will be highly interactive, combining theory and practice throughout, with plenty of opportunity for discussion.
